The Fence Authority Scholarship

Prize: $1,000

All applicants must currently be pursuing a Bachelor’s (or Baccalaureate) Degree related to a profession that is dedicated to improving the beautification of US communities, such as  Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Horticulture, and Environmental and Marine Sciences. Applicants must be currently accepted into a program and must currently hold or anticipate holding a high school diploma or GED within the 2018-2019 school year. Applicants must be currently involved or recently involved (within one year of date of application) in their community, either through school programs or voluntary programs.

Academic Eligibility:

The Fence Authority offers cash awards to students currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a field that will improve and benefit our communities functionally and aesthetically, such as civil engineering, horticulture, architecture, or ecology.

*Applicant must have earned a high school diploma or GED, or be planning to earn their high school diploma or GED in the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Academic Level: Applicants must be enrolled in college full time for the entire academic year in which they plan to use their scholarship, based on their individual school’s requirements for full-time status.

Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled full time in an accepted major during the 2018-2019 school year.

Residency: Applicants must be a US Citizen attending or accepted into a US college or university.

Application Review: The TFA Scholarship Committee will review all applications for completeness first then for quality of work. Incomplete applications will not be eligible for consideration and will be discarded.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on merit as evidenced in grades, personal statement, quality of work, and level of demonstrated commitment to bettering our communities.

Application Deadline:
June 30, 2018

All Application materials must be emailed no later than the deadline date. Materials received later will be rejected, resulting in disqualification.

Winner will be chosen by:
July 30, 2018

Non-winners will not be notified

2015-2016 Scholarship Winner

James Sullivan has always felt a profound connection with nature, and this connection led him to pursue an environmentally focused education path and lifestyle. His passion for the environment and desire to incorporate sustainable systems into urban areas made him an ideal candidate for The Fence Authority’s Scholarship. He was chosen as the 2015-2016 winner and has used the scholarship to support his Environmental Sciences degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

2016-2017 Scholarship Winner

Erin Gray lives and plans to work in the Southwestern United States, where water conservation is a major concern. In her application for The Fence Authority Scholarship, she told us about her intention to become a hydrologist upon obtaining a degree from the University of Arizona. We were blown away by Erin’s outreach experience and her work assisting in investigating the isotopic chemistry in the Cienega Creek Watershed, so we awarded her with The Fence Authority Scholarship for 2016-2017.

2017-2018 Scholarship Winner

Anna Vancina was chosen as the winner of The Fence Authority Scholarship for 2017-2018, the third consecutive year for the scholarship. Anna, who plans on a career as an environmental specialist or consultant in the area of wastewater treatment, is studying at the University of Illinois Springfield. She’s exploring courses that pertain to water resources and quality. Outside of school, Anna volunteers for the 4-H program, and she enjoys spending her leisure time enjoying the outdoors (especially the beach).
