Understanding the Difference Between Red and White Cedar
White cedar is naturally and consistently blonde in color and is milled into beautiful fence boards that are usually surfaced (planed) on the two faces and two edges. This wood weathers gracefully to a silvery gray and is very stable. Many coastal homes across New England are protected with beautiful white cedar roofs and siding. White cedar is typically milled and sourced from New England and Quebec. Its proximity to this region makes it very affordable.
Red cedar is naturally cinnamon in color and is milled into a wide variety of fence boards. The boards range from rough sawn to surfaced on all four sides. This fiber typically has a broad spectrum of color and weathers darker than white cedar. Red cedar is also very stable and has many other uses, including timber framing and interior carpentry. Red cedar is natural to the northwest coast of the United States and British Columbia, and is slightly more expensive than white cedar due to shipping distances.
The Cedartech brand of wooden fences includes both the red and white cedar species, giving you two fabulous options for your new wood fence. We visit our source mills and personally inspect the quality of the wood to offer you the finest products. Whichever wood you choose, you can expect the same great quality workmanship.
