Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget the Fence!
While you’re out in your yard preparing for warmer weather, don’t overlook one of the most important parts of your yard: the fence. There are a few easy things you can do to make sure your fence stays in good shape during the spring and summer months when you’re spending more time in your yard.
1. Clear weeds, vines, and other obstructions
The lack of yard care over the winter can really show in those first weeks of spring. When you’re out cleaning up your planting beds and mowing the grass, do your fence a favor and remove overhanging branches and any vines or weeds that have popped up along your fence line. It’s also a good idea to prune nearby plants, so that falling branches and early spring growth don’t impede upon your fence.
2. Wash your fence
Whether your fence is wood, vinyl, or aluminum, early spring is a great time to give it a cleaning. A garden hose should be enough to help loosen up dirt and grime and keep your fence looking great. For a little extra power, use a sponge or rag to wipe the fence down. If you’d like an even deeper, more thorough clean, or if a garden hose and a sponge isn’t giving you your desired results, you can use a pressure washer.
3. Check your posts and hardware
Since you’ll likely be spending more time outside in the warmer months, it’s a good idea to check your hardware and make sure that your gates close properly and are hanging straight. After weathering the winter months, it’s possible that some of your hardware could need to be adjusted. Also be sure to check your posts to be sure they’re all standing strong and ready to take on the summer.
